Just Go For It: Why You Should Stop Putting Things Off

We all do it. We get busy. We get tired. So we put things off, telling ourselves there will be plenty of time, plenty of opportunity. We’ll just do it later. It’ll be fine.

But here’s a secret: it might not be.

When I studied in France, over 5 years ago now, I did it because I knew it was my last opportunity to say “see ya!” for 8 or 9 months. What kind of job, I asked myself, would ever allow me that freedom? I couldn’t think of one. So I took the plunge and applied to a study abroad program in Dijon, in the Burgundy region of France. It ended up being much more expensive than I’d anticipated, but honestly, I don’t regret it. I can’t regret it. It was truly the experience of a lifetime.

The reasons I can’t travel now are not at all the reasons I thought they would be. I thought it would be money. I thought it would be time. Instead, it’s my health.

And while studying abroad is something I’m glad I did do, there are many more things I regret not doing before I lost something I was unknowingly taking for granted.

Rock climbing; obstacle course races; hiking; kayaking — the list could go on. At this point in my illness/recovery, I hold hope that I’ll be able to try at least some of these things in the future. But wouldn’t it be great if I’d done them I when I could? If I had, I’d have memories instead of regrets.

So pick something. Something you’ve wanted to do, something you’ve been putting off. Something you think will make your heart soar, or give you the challenge you’ve been thirsting for. And then — just do it.

I promise you won’t regret it.
